The Department of Commerce in Government Girls’ General Degree College, Kolkata was introduced in 2017. Affiliated under the University of Calcutta, this is the first government college to offer commerce stream exclusively to the girls’ students. CA Souma Halder, Head and Assistant Professor is in charge of the department since its inception in June, 2017.
The course structure of the University of Calcutta as per CBCS model aims to equip students with concepts of business-trade-industry and at the same time helps them stay up-to-date with the recent developments of the business environment. The present NEP syllabus further improves the course by enabling students to develop practical skills with respect to Computerized Accounting, Application of IT in Business, E-filing of taxes, to help them undertake internships and improve their job prospects as freshers.
The department started with B. Com (General) with an initial intake of 25 seats in the academic session 2017-18 which expanded to B.Com. (Honours) with an intake capacity of 50 seats from the academic session 2018-19. Presently, the department has an intake capacity of 60 seats.
