ROKEYA SAKHAWAT HOSSAIN CENTRE FOR COMPARATIVE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Introduction:
India is a home of 121 languages and 270 mother tongues among them 22 languages are official. In fact, so many languages and dialects are spoken in India that it is often described as a ‘museum of languages’. This ‘linguistic pluralism’ is closely tied to the cultural heritage and identity of specific regions or communities. They preserve and transmit unique customs, traditions, folklore, literature, and oral histories that contribute to the rich cultural diversity of our country.
To preserve and promote this rich cultural and linguistic diversity Government Girls General Degree College established Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain Centre for Comparative Languages and Literature. It is a study and research center which was founded to explore and develop the infinite connection between diverse areas of various language departments of our college. Such as: Arabic, Bengali, English, Hindi, Persian and Urdu.

The organizing committee for One Day International Seminar on Munshi Prem chand.

Organized by Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain center for Comparative Languages and Literature in collaboration with IQAC, GGGDC and Value Added Seminar Committee on 11th October, 2023 at Lecture Hall 2.
An unique encouraging Translation Workshop was held at college lecture hall 2, with active participation of our college students under the guidance of faculty members from all language departments.
To observe the significance of International Translation Day (30th September) RSH center for comparative languages and literature was organized this college level Translation Workshop. Our 33 students were attended this workshop. We gave them various original text samples( Prose and Poetry both) from Arabic, Bengali, English, Hindi, Persian and Urdu literature to translate these into different languages. RSH Centre was keen to explore the creativity and skill of languages of our students and also tried to add value to education through this translation workshop.
The Principal of GGGDC, Dr. S. M. Alquadri was delivered her inaugural lecture to the students and faculty members.
Dr. Sampa Sen and Dr. Shabnam Parveen, Jt. Conveners of RSH center were delivered lecture to the students to teach them the significance of translation in the present world.
Professors of Language departments also taught, the value of translation, rather the skill of expression in different languages might help them (students) to earn.
Prof. Dr. Shahid Jamil (Persian Dept.) Prof. Dr. Debjani Roy Moulik (English Dept.), Prof. Md. Mohsin Khan (Urdu Dept.) and Prof. Abdul Matin (Arabic Dept.) were also attended and guided our students for this workshop.





Organised by RSH Centre for Comparative Languages and Literature, GGGDC in collaboration with Rokeya Birth Anniversary Celebration Committee.
A meeting was held in the Principal ‘s chamber with Smt. Pranati Kar, Joint Secretary, Rokeya birth centenary anniversary celebration committee, on 15.12.2023 to organise 143 birth anniversary celebration programme in collaboration with their organisation.
We the members of RSH centre and Respected Principal were thought that, this is our duty pay tribute and to memorize the endless contribution of Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain to Bengali literature and her feminist thoughts.
That is why we organised an unornamented programme in our college premises on 19.12.2023 at lecture hall 2, as a collaborative venture.
Our respected Principal Dr. S. M. Alquadri, Mrs Pranati Kar, Jt. Secretary of Rokeya Birth Anniversary Celebration Committee, IQAC coordinator Dr. Debaprasad Banerjee, Dr. Sampa Sen, Convenor of RSH centre, Dr. Shabnam Parveen, convenor and Head of the Dept. of Urdu, Mrs Anjali Palit, member of Rokeya committee, Prof Syed Ali Irfan Naqvi from Kidderpur College and Prof Jayanta Jay Chattopadhyay, head of the dept of Political Science and College office staffs paid their tribute to Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain on her 143 birth anniversary.
This programme was beautifully filled up with memoir of Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain, slices from her proses, few words on her contribution towards girl’s education.
Thus we relentlessly tried to keep our journey forward with our beloved students.
Our students were actively present to decorate the hall, they participated their duties on registration desk and attended the whole programme with respect and attention.
10 Professors, including our Principal and 74 students have attended this birth anniversary celebration programme.



Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain Centre for Comparative Languages and Literature, Government Girls’ General Degree College, Kolkata organized one-day lecture and a film show in collaboration with IQAC and Cine Club, of the college and Know Your Neighbour and Rokeya Birth Centenary Committee to pay tribute to Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain on December 12, 2024 from 2:00pm. The inaugural lecture was given by the Principal, Dr. Syeda Shariqatul Moula Alquadri. She spoke on the life of Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain. This was followed by a speech delivered by Sri Prantosh Banerjee on the contribution of Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain in empowering women. The programme included the screening of the Iranian film Offside, that was directed by Zafar Panahi. A wall magazine was launched by the students of the Departments of Bengali, English and Urdu. Dr. Angshuman Sarkar, the Teachers’ Council Secretary, delivered the vote of thanks. Sm. Pranati Kar, Secretary, Rokeya Birth Centenary Committee and Sm. Mala Barman of the same organisation were present as guests. The programme was attended by 48 students and 14 guests and teachers.
